Do you have some furniture you need to donate but are struggling to find a place that takes it? Even Goodwill often will not take big pieces anymore. Or maybe you are in need of furniture and can’t find anything in good, usable shape. NW Furniture Bank is coming to Vancouver, Wash., to complete this cycle and get your furniture out of your house and into the home of someone in need.
Founded in 2007 in Tacoma, the NW Furniture Bank started out as a small nonprofit in a space donated by The Old Cannery Furniture Warehouse. “Evolving and expanding, we moved into the current location in 2012 with the addition of our retail program,” shares Haley Haines, director of development for NW Furniture Bank.
She says its mission is to “restore hope, dignity, and stability to our community by recycling donated furniture to people in need. We connect people with stuff, to people that really need that stuff, transforming empty rooms into homes.”

NW Furniture Bank Comes to Vancouver WA
Clark County residents can now easily donate to the NW Furniture Bank at its new location, 14000 SE 6th Street, just off 139th and SE Mill Plain. Vancouver was chosen from a list of cities they were considering based on community need, community support (both financial and donated furniture), and logistics and infrastructure, such as freeway access.
“Ultimately, we were offered the opportunity to lease a space on the now redeveloped block of 16th and Washington downtown Vancouver,” Haley adds. “Choosing to expand into Clark County has been deeply affirming. This community shows up in powerful ways, and the impact on local families is clear and growing.”
The new location will have all the same services as the Tacoma location, Haley shares. It will provide basic and essential furniture and housewares in a choice-driven atmosphere – meaning those in need can shop the donated items for what they need.
“This service strengthens the entire community by supporting social service partners with a critical resource their clients need to move forward,” she adds. “It creates a meaningful bridge between people who have furniture to give and families who truly need it, turning generosity into something tangible and immediate. We’re also stewarding often beloved items, pieces that carry stories, giving them a new purpose in homes where they can support stability and dignity. In doing so, we’re not just meeting a basic need, we’re helping create spaces where people can rebuild, rest, and belong.”
NW Furniture Bank is in the process of moving this month and will be open the first week of June. They will be holding a ribbon cutting on July 15. You can RSVP on the website.
How to Use NW Furniture Bank Services
For those looking to unclutter their homes, the NW Furniture Bank takes most furniture items, including:
- Dressers
- Nightstands
- Coffee/end tables
- Dining tables and chairs
- Couches
- Upholstered chairs
- Bookcase
They also take essential housewares such as:
- Dishes
- Cookware
- Linens
- Lamps
- Small Appliances
“Think what you’d need if you were setting up a home for the first time,” says Haley. You can find a longer list on the NW Furniture Bank website. Frequently asked about items that they do not take include mattresses, baby items and medical equipment.
Clients are referred through community partners, like an elementary school counselor or a church volunteer, along with organizations like social services. “We gather some basic information upfront, including number of children and requested items to help us frame an open-ended conversation around their needs,” Hailey explains about the process. “These items can be loaded in client-provided vehicles and taken with them that day, or they can be locally delivered.”
Don’t have furniture to give but want to support the NW Furniture Bank? “There are many ways to stay involved, including becoming a monthly donor to provide steady, reliable support, or participating in opportunities connected to the build – like ‘buying a brick’ to leave a lasting mark,” shares Haley. “Every contribution helps ensure this space continues to serve families for years to come.”
