Volunteers and staff have been saving, pricing and storing holiday merchandise for a year. Each week, holiday items arrive at ReTails Thrift Store. And each week, these items are sorted and prepared for the first week in November. Approximately 8,000 square feet of space is dedicated to Christmas. And each year, shoppers wait for opening morning to be able to purchase items for their homes, organizations, businesses, churches and more.
Holiday merchandise is not new to the thrift store but the idea of saving it and presenting in a beautiful, “giant” way started three years ago. At that time, a small storefront was created for A Christmas Tail – the name given to the store by the volunteers. It was entirely staffed by volunteers. That tradition continues with two volunteers leading the effort, along with additional volunteers and staff helping with restocking and customer service.
A Christmas Tail has everything for the season, including trees, wreaths, ornaments, linens and much more. In fact, last year during the season, ReTails sold 28,000 individual holiday items. And this year won’t disappoint. “We have more merchandise this year and the items are incredible,” said Paul MacKay, Vice President of Retail Operations for the Humane Society for Southwest Washington (HSSW). “As items are purchased, the displays are restocked continuously throughout the day.” ReTails is owned and operated by HSSW and all sales benefit the dogs and cats in our community.
